Picture in your mind walking to church in the dark, cold night of Christmas Eve with your family and neighbors; a little girl making your escape from school to the dime store to buy a bag full of candy; soldiers home from WWII meeting the train at the Bremond Depot to retrieve the casket of a fallen comrade; or a little girl attending the funerals of those fallen heroes during the school day at St. Mary’s. These are just a tiny portion of the oral histories recorded from the Bremond Historical Society Polish Oral History Project.

2012 Koledy Polskie In Chappell Hill

At 12:45 PM on December 29, 2012, an enthusiastic group of kolednicy or Polish Christmas carolers began singing old time carols on the steps of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, a historic Washington County parish that was founded in 1889 by early Polish immigrants to Texas. The weather was windy and cool but overall it was a beautiful day for the 5th annual Kolędy Polskie in Chappell Hill. St. Stanislaus’ pastor, Father Jozef Musiol, a native Polish speaker with a great singing voice, helped Mike Addicks, Dr. Jim Mazurkiewicz, Mike Kurtin and Brian Marshall lead the group of about 75 singers of all ages.

Brian Marshall and The Texas Slavic Playboys Play the BlackPot Festival in Lafayette, LA

In October of 2012, after a short visit in New Orleans, I drove two and a half hours up to Lafayette, Louisiana, to play at the annual BlackPot Festival. Each year, the South Louisiana BlackPot Festival & Cook-Off is held at Lafayette’s Acadian Village, a living history park. In addition to presenting many kinds of roots music, the festival holds a “cook off” (hence the name “Blackpot”) in which contestants serve their best versions of Louisiana gumbo, cracklins, and jambalaya. Visitors sample the wares (mmmmm!) and leave tickets at the booths of their favorite chefs. The cooks who get the most tickets from satisfied customers win cash prizes, but nobody seemed overly competitive at this friendly festival.

St. Stanislaus Catholic church in Chappell Hill, Texas held their 4th annual Dożynki Mass and Celebration at the historic old church on Sunday, November 18, 2012. The dożynki or harvest festival is a joyful celebration which dates back to the middle ages in Poland. The celebration honors our Polish Heritage by giving thanks for our many blessing during the week of Thanksgiving.

Polish Day Celebrated At The Texas Renaissance Festival

The Texas Renaisance Festival in Plantersville, Texas hosted Barbarian Invasion Day on Saturday, November 10, 2012 but the Polish Pub also sponsored a Polish Day celebration. When the grand parade started, there was a large group of people dressed in traditional Polish folk attire carrying the Polish Pub banner and a large Polish flag.

2012 Polish Heritage Festival At St. Mary In Brenham

St. Mary’s Catholic Church hosted their 22nd annual Polish Heritage Festival on Sunday, October 28, 2012 at the Parish Activity Center on the church grounds in Brenham, Texas. At 11 am, a delicious Polish meal was served to the waiting crowd. The meal included baked ham, kielbasa, rosół z kury, czarnina, kiszona kapusta, potatoes and green beans along with delicious desserts and ice tea, soft drinks and cold piwo to drink.
